Some thoughts of Alan Watts

Why, it seems as if we can not adapt to the physical reality without destroying it?

Why our society teaches that life is a struggle and competition, if one wins - another must lose?

We create technological world that promises fulfillment of our dreams at the tips of our fingertips. But, as in fairy tales where dreams come true, they are not at all real. All our products - cars, houses, our clothes, food, seem to have been created from pure thought, which however lacks content. And in many ways wealth we create is unreal. And we are appalled by this. And as a result we are going buying more. And as a result, our environment has resembled a playground that has too many expensive toys. Toys that we get bored of as fast as we bought them - a few minutes. Furthermore, we are at war with the basic material reality. We want to cross the boundaries of the possible, to do more and more in less time and we work to make money that we can not be eat, but we can buy things with them. And then we hurry home to get away from work and have fun. But for most families - is to watch an electronic reproduction of life, virtual reality - you can not touch it, you can not smell it or taste it. One might think that people in the materialistic world go home to experience the true meaning of life - fun and festivities, passionate love or a combination of music and dance. But nothing like that - we go home to watch passively this flashing screen. Mile after mile of dark houses and in every house there is one of these boxes, which flashes. And we are all isolated watching it and therefore have no real connection and communication with each other. This isolation of individuals in our society creates a world of mindless mobs.

We meet just to express our differences - which football team we support, who is more successful, who has more money, and many more. It is no accident the presence of so much violence and wars on TV. This is done in order to impress upon people that this is normal. When someone is jammed on the road a person will curses will scream to heaven rather than to think that there is a human being with his problems and concerns just like you.

It seems as if society wants to impress upon the individual, that the expression of love and understanding is much more dangerous than the manifestation of hostility, selfishness and confrontation. And this kind of society, not directly, subconsciously, but seems to be aimed at the destruction of life, not to create it.
